MID GULF COAST CHAPTER OF MEDICAL ASSISTANTS MEETING
Meeting minutes for: Saturday, November 16, 2013
Meeting Place: Manatee Technical Institute, Bradenton, Fl
Meeting Time: 10:00 am
Meeting was called to order by President Donna Heatley at 10:15am.
First Order of Business - The meeting notes from September 2013 were read. The tentative future training dates were given. It was also put out to all in attendance, that if anyone knew of any personnel that would be willing to speak, to please contact the chapter secretary (Debbie Morales) or President (Donna Heatley).
Old Business - The discussion was raised again for everyone to continue to find creative ways of enlisting more Medical Assistants to our chapter.
Treasurer Report - The Chapter balance in the checking account at Sun Trust Bank is $847.98.
Training - A wonderful training session on Hematology was conducted by Dr. Patti Dolan. She discussed the 3 different types of blood found in our body (Red, White and Platelets). She stressed the importance of blood, how it is made/formed in our body, the benefits of it, the signs and symptoms if we have to much or not enough in our bodies. She also discussed the importance of bone marrow, how is made only in the long bones of the body, what it is, the procedure for obtaining it, and the function it plays in our bodies. The different labs and procedures that are performed to find out why blood levels are not correct. She covered the Lymphatic System and what happens when its not working correctly, and the most common signs and symptoms to look for. She did an outstanding job of explaining the importance of the Medical Assistant in the office, and how we are the front line for our patients. Why it is so important for us to be attentive to our patients and be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of problems in their bodies.
We also had training from The Center for Building Hope, Sondra explained that the Center was a place for people with cancer, who are recovering, or are in remission, and their families to come and get support, and activities to help them on their journey. She explained that all the centers program are designed to cover the mind, body and soul. Sondra a cancer survivor herself, along with 2 other volunteers shared their stories of how the center has given them hope, others to share their stories with who knew what they were going through, different activities, exercise session, and a variety of other resources to help them in their recuperation. They all described their experiences at the center was like getting a big hug! All the programs are free to patients and their families. The center sounds like a wonderful place to get hope and heal.
Chapter President announcements - President Heatley announced the officers had set the following tentative meeting dates:
Saturday, January 18, 2014
Saturday, February 22, 2014
Saturday, April 5, 2014

November 16th Meeting
Why Are CEU Credits Important To You???
According to an article from the AMT State President, dated November 5, 2013,
"In order to input patient orders/data into the electronic
medical record computer system at your workplace, which is
required by the Affordable Care Act, all Medical Assistants
must be certified by a national credentialing organization
or be state licensed. The deadline for compliance is
July, 2014. Florida DOES NOT have licensure for
Medical Assistants." However your CMA (AAMA) or RMA,
(AMT) certification is approved by the federal
government. However, you must keep your credentials
current. 12 CEU credits every year will keep you on track.
If you do not earn your credits through the Chapter meetings
or State meetings, it will cost you approximately $10.00 for
each credit earned by sending in completed test materials to
the AAMA or AMT National Organization. This
is a $600.00 expense over the 5 year period.
Saturday, November 16, 2013, you will earn 2 CEU credits
just for attending the meeting at Manatee Technical
Institute East Campus, Medical Assisting Department, Room
225. And its FREE! plus snacks and drinks!
This is possible because the professional community is
willing to donate their time as speakers. Your officers of
Mid Gulf Coast Chapter are also donating their time for the
good of their fellow Medical Assistants by planning and
working toward the goal of providing these seminars for you.
We expect to have an overflowing room for this 2 hour
session, so please plan to arrive at 9:45 am. RSVP
would be appreciated, to plan the snacks and drinks.
You may also call, 941-751-8479 x 2028. --"You Must
Stay for the Entire 2 Hours to Receive the 2 CEU Credits---."
You might need to inform your physicians, your office
managers and co-workers so everyone is ready by this July,
2014 deadline. There will be six hour National
Certifying Examination Reviews and 2 day Educational
Programs hosted by the AMT (RMA) organization. We are
waiting to hear more from the AAMA (CMA) group. These
programs will charge fees. It is in your best interest
to attend your chapter seminars and stay current with your
CEU requirements.
We will have more information available to you concerning
the new law at the meeting.

Your Officers of Mid Gulf Coast Chapter of Medical Assistants
Meeting Minutes of Saturday, May 18, 2013
Place: Pinnacle Medical Group Conference Room
315 75Th Street, Bradenton, Florida
The meeting was called to order by President Donna Heatley @ 11:15am following the Program presented by Mary Murphy on PCMH of Primary Care Practices regarding payment and bonuses, sponsored by Federal Insurance to keep costs in control and Patient Centered Rating System. One CEU was earned In Administrative category for the 12 members present. 2 students from MTI also attended the meeting. Both students are student members and will graduate on June 30, 2013.
Old business-The web site including Facebook for the chapter was again discussed and Ann Morris will get together with Gloria Carlbert to coordinate the entire project for ease of access and more control over the information being available for the members of Mid Gulf Coast Chapter. Many good computer ideas were presented as to the best way to achieve the goals.
Treasurer report was given by Jean Fry. The chapter balance in the checking account at SunTrust Bank is $631.98. Jean reminded the members we are charged $12.00 monthly by the bank until the balance reaches $1000.00. She asked members if there was any possibility of having sponsors for the group and ask for pledges of support for the chapter from Physicians or Medical Practices of $25.00 to $100.00. Debbie Moralas volunteered to construct a flyer for a future meeting for the members to distribute. We will continue the discussion at the Planning Meeting for the following 2013-2014 year.
President Heatley announced that there will be two more meetings in 2013. Jean Fry announced the Manatee Technical Institute Buildings are closed on weekends in response to the budget issues of the school district. The general consensus was the group would like to continue to meet on Saturday morning at 10 am. The discussion was very productive, with member Divina Mojica-Brian telling us the building at Waldermere-attached to Sarasota Memorial Hospital has meeting rooms available and she felt many more CMAs would start attending the meetings if they were held in the Sarasota area. She graciously stated she will contact the manager to see if we could hold one of the fall meetings at that location. We discussed talking with Iris Alvarado, Practice Manager, Lakewood Ranch, of also securing a meeting room for a one of the yearly meetings, and Donna Heatley stated we would be welcome at Pinnacle to use the conference room for meetings. We will have an Officers Planning Meeting to set up a schedule of dates for the coming year and plan the locations and programs. Jean Fry ask for ideas of speakers and to consider asking the physicians at the member’s office to be a speaker for the following year.
President Heatley gave the members a background of information as to her retaining the position of President for one more year. She was Vice President and finished out the term of our dear decreased President, Barbara Feeney. She graciously will accept the job of President for one more year and called to action members to step up to the plate and become more involved as officers in this great chapter. President Heatley asked for volunteers for the positions as officers for the coming year and the slate of officers was filled as follows;
Vice President: Genices Morua
Secretary: Debbie Morales
Treasurer: Jean Fry
Public Affairs: Ann Morris
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:30 am.
Respectfully submitted,
Jean Fry, Acting Secretary
